What the new employment rules mean for cleaning businesses

A plain-English guide to the changes and what contractors need to do before they take effect.

Employment law is changing, and the changes land hardest on labour-intensive sectors like ours. Most of our members are small businesses without an in-house HR team, so we have pulled together what you need to know.

Where to start

The changes are being introduced in stages, not all at once. Start by checking three things against your current contracts and handbook:

  1. Contracts. Are your terms up to date for every role, including casual and part-time staff?
  2. Hours. How do you offer, change and cancel shifts, and how much notice do you give?
  3. Absence. How do you handle sickness, and from what point is it paid?

What it means for pricing

Changes that raise the cost of employment affect every contract you hold. Where a contract runs for several years, talk to your clients early about how known changes will be reflected in the price.

Price the contract you will be running next year, not the one you ran last year.
